Welcome to the nursery...

Happy 22 weeks!   With only 18 short weeks to go, the impatient Fryes decided it was time to decorate the nursery :)  We just couldn't wait any longer!  As I mentioned previously, we knew we wanted some old Americana mixed with America's favorite past time, baseball.  And, as Billy told me, the Red Sox and Fenway park are baseball.  I think what got me really excited was receiving an email from a new co-worker of mine with a Fenway-inspired nursery photo she found online.  Check this out...

My favorite part of this nursery, besides the fantastic green monster-painted custom cabinetry with those bright white knobs, are the two stadium seats in the back near the glider chair.  You can actually buy Fenway stadium seats online.  This is a little out of our budget, but wow...what a great idea!  Dad can hang out and eat Cracker Jack and drink beer while mom nurses :)  http://www.yawkeywaystore.com/shop/authentic-fenway-park-seats/product/627.aspx  After doing a little more research, turns out this nursery belonged to a former Red Sox player, found in the $3.1 million dollar penthouse he was selling when he traded teams and had to leave Boston.  Too bad his penthouse is a little out of our budget, too ;-)

After seeing this, I knew it was time to get serious and start building the nursery of our dreams for lil' fryebaby.  First, we needed to find the nursery furniture basics...crib, dresser, changing table, and rocker/glider.  We decided to go with white furniture and a grey chair so that this furniture could be re-purposed for more fryebabies to come, and work well for girls and boys alike.  We decided not to go with a convertible (3-in-one, or even 4-in-one) crib, knowing that we really just needed a sturdy crib that will survive many teething kiddos and terrible-2 toddlers.  Keeping the nursery furniture in the nursery also allows us to upgrade our little guy when his little brother or little sister come along and he gets booted out of the nursery and into his "big boy" room.  As for the dresser and changing table, we decided on an extra wide dresser that provided TONS of storage, as well as featured a removable "changing table topper".  We're planning on this dresser lasting for many, many years and wanted to spend our money on a good one that we really loved.  I still have my dad's childhood dresser that he passed down to me (in our guest bedroom)...so I was looking for something that would last just the same.

Finding the chair was the hardest part...and I'm still not sure we've actually found the perfect chair.  I'm going out on a limb on this purchase and buying a chair that I've never sat in before!  As most of you know, I worked at Crate&Barrel last year and am very partial to their furniture and the high quality American-made construction.  C&B's sister company, Land of Nod (http://www.landofnod.com/), sells children's furniture and nursery decor that is just so darn adorable.  Sadly, their closest store is in Chicago (road trip anyone?!?), meaning I can't touch or feel anything before purchasing.  We picked out a swivel glider with a tight back (meaning no loose cushion), which is my favorite kind of chair.  I think it will be easy to get in and out of, and the rolled arms should be very comfortable for nursing, cuddling, and flirting with my little man.  They will send us a swatch of the fabric before they finalize the order, so at least we can be confident that the color and material will be just right!  Fingers crossed!!!

Once the crib, dresser, and chair were behind us, it was time to move on to the decor!  Here's a collage I put together today to help you feel like you were with us as we shopped this weekend.  And, of course, the collage features a scaled floor plan of the nursery so you know where each and every item will be placed...it's as though you're here with us!

My favorite part about this nursery is how easy it is to find great pieces to complement the items purchased already.  None of it is "baby-ish" and finding red, white, or blue decor can be done anywhere, not just at Buy Buy Baby or Babies R' Us.  In fact, you almost can't find this sort of stuff at those stores, making me confident that his nursery will be one-of-a-kind.  Hopefully he'll love it as much as we do and take this stuff to his college dorm one day ;-) hahah  If not, Billy already has dibs on the baseball lamp and big 3D Boston B for his office at work.

In other updates, since I was delinquent during Week 21, check out the growing baby bump.  Minimal change, I suppose...maybe a little more pokey-outy.

And, just to make sure we don't forget about our first lil' furrbaby, check out this fun pic of Skylar.  Can't wait for her to be a big sister!

(Can we just stop for one moment and appreciate how color-coordinated this entire post is?  Americana nursery, red/white/blue jean bump photo, and "America's gentleman" breed in her tuxedo on a red leather ottoman.  wow....)

Since dinner is almost ready, I must sign-off for now.  Special thanks to my mom for coming up to see us this weekend and helping make all of the above nursery fun possible.  In the spirit of the nursery theme, we went to see the Nats game on Friday afternoon and experienced one of America's favorite past times' true realities...getting hit by a foul ball!  While enjoying food and drinks with our hosts on the terrace, Mom's hand was struck by a foul ball head on.  She was a trooper and made the experience all the more memorable.  Worst part, though...we didn't even get to keep the ball!  It hit Mom's hand, then mine, and bounced to the table next to us where a dad snatched it up and gave it to his kid.  Lesson learned...no foul balls for this lil' fryebaby unless he takes the heat!

Future posts to look forward to...

It's a BOY!

Well, if you haven't heard already, we found out on Monday that we're having a little baby BOY!  Billy and I are so excited and can't wait to meet the little guy.  It was a long process on Monday trying to reveal the gender.  My ultrasounds are performed at an ultrasound facility next door to my OB's office.  The technician spent over an hour and a half with me and my tummy (with Billy in the room) trying to check out all of Fryebaby's parts and pieces...which was no easy task.  Turns out we have a modest one who is already anti-paparazzi.  His arms and hands were waving in front of his face the entire time, and his legs were crossed and pulled in tightly.  Little by little, the technician was finally able to see his nose, lips, brain, all four chambers of the heart, his spine, the umbilical cord, and last, but not least, his private region.  All checked-out and he appears to be a healthy little dude.  She estimated that he is 12 ounces and had a healthy heart rate in the 130s.  Here's a photo of his precious little nose and head.

If the photo is not clear enough, or you can't imagine how big a 12 oz. baby is, my BabyBump app says he's the size of a small cantaloupe this week, about 6-1/2 inches long.

With the news of the baby's gender behind us now, the shopping can officially begin!  Woo hoo!  During the first trimester, I worried that the shopper/designer in me was not ever going to get excited about decorating the nursery or buying all the baby stuff, but it turns out that I just needed to find out if it was a boy or a girl, and as soon as I did, the shopper in me is alive and well again!  Hahaha...don't worry, I won't go too crazy.

Billy and I decided to create a nursery that features vintage Americana with a bit of America's favorite pastime mixed-in (go Red Sox!).  The room will feature a vintage American flag painting with red, white and blue bedding and décor, in the form of plaid, madras, stripes, stars, polka dots, etc.  Billy even mentioned including a "green monster" feature wall...looking for creative ideas, if you have any (and if you don't know what the green monster is...check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Monster OR http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fenway-park-green-monster.jpg).  My hope is to create a room he'll want to become a big boy in!  Check out some super cute finds I have my eye on and send me other ideas or links that you find.

20 weeks Baby Bump

Check out my first official baby bump photo.  We're twenty weeks in, with twenty weeks to go.  I'm going to try and wear this same outfit week-by-week so I can really see the progress.

I went to my first prenatal yoga class yesterday and really enjoyed it.  There were about 15 of us in the class, and I had the "youngest" baby in the class.  I'm excited to continue going every Saturday morning and learn more stretches and positions to help me to adjust to my changing body.  Plus, it was a great opportunity to meet other expectant moms and hear about what they're going through and feeling.

Tomorrow's the big gender reveal day!  Billy and I are taking off from work early to go to the 2PM ultrasound and 3PM OB visit.  I'm soooo excited!!  Will let everyone know as soon as we do!

Halfway there!

Hello family & friends!

This is my first official blog post ever...tah dah!  What better reason to start a blog than the upcoming arrival of our very own "fryebaby"!  As most of you probably have heard, we are expecting small Frye to join us just after the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, December 2nd!  I will be 20 weeks along on Monday (halfway there), which is when our next ultrasound is scheduled.  We hope to find out the gender of the baby during this visit.  I'd always assumed pre-pregnancy that I wouldn't want to find out the sex in advance of its birth, but ever since finding out we were pregnant, I've been dying to know!  I can't wait to start decorating, choosing a theme for the nursery, shopping for cute clothes, etc.  I'm also anxious to only have to think about potential names for a boy or a girl, and not both.  I think naming the child has been the most stressful part yet...which goes to show you that I've been extremely blessed with an easy pregnancy so far.

Pre-gender reveal, we have started collecting some baby stuff from our friends and family, mostly all second-hand good stuff...swings, play mats, an ergobaby carrier (http://store.ergobaby.com/), gender neutral clothes (including an adorable snow suit!), and even something called a "mamaroo" (check it out: http://www.4moms.com/mamaroo).  Our best find yet is a second-hand car seat and stroller combo...for way less than we'd pay retail new.  Everything is in the nursery-to-be and I smile every time I walk past the room and see all the fun baby stuff piling up.  It's starting to feel more and more "real" every day.

I plan on commencing the week-by-week "bump" photos next week, so you can visit the blog and check out the progress.  I'll also post any ultrasound photos so you can check out fryebaby in the making.  According to the BabyBump app on my phone, we are 19 weeks and the baby is 6 inches long, about the size of an heirloom tomato.  I haven't been able to feel the baby yet...but I'm told the "flutters" will begin soon.  Can't wait to interrupt a meeting at work to yell out "OMG!  My baby's moving!".

Before I officially publish my first ever blog post, I thought I would mention my current "to do" list...read it and let me know what I'm forgetting or if you have any insight on any of my action items:

-Find / Contact a Pediatrician
-Ask my doctor about fetal monitoring during labor, if I'm allowed to bring props to the delivery room (like a birthing ball), how many people are allowed in the delivery room, and discuss my birth plan
-Sign-up for prenatal yoga class (check!  Just signed up for my first class this Saturday in Reston, VA at Beloved Yoga...check it out...http://www.belovedyoga.com/pages.php?name=Prenatal)
-Start a gift registry...or at least figure out where I want to be registered
-Take a tour of the hospital (Inova Fairfax is where we'll deliver the baby: http://www.inova.org/patient-and-visitor-information/facilities/inova-fairfax-hospital/index.jsp)
-Visit the daycare center where we put down a deposit (Winwood Daycare in Brambleton)
-Research cloth vs. disposable diapers
-Sign up for birth classes, breast feeding class, and infant CPR class
-Call our favorite painter and get him scheduled to come paint the house & the nursery in October or November
-Figure out what we're supposed to be doing regarding health insurance, creating a will, and all that other complicated stuff when you bring a new life into this world.

Can't wait to post next week and reveal the gender!  Let's hope the baby cooperates on Monday and shows off his or her "stuff"!
